Everton Mlalazi

Ntutuko Everton Mlalazi, born on 22 May 1982, stands as one of Zimbabwe and Africa's most decorated, influential, and visionary contemporary gospel recording artists, choir directors, and philanthropists. Revered across Southern Africa for his commanding tenor voice, immaculate vocal arrangements, and transcendent worship ministrations, Mlalazi has become a leading standard-bearer for Zimbabwean gospel on the continental and global stage. As a headline soloist and key minister with the internationally renowned South African gospel collective Spirit of Praise, the founding director of the acclaimed The Vine Music Ministry and Worship Therapy, and the architect of the annual Celestial Chorus Thanksgiving worship gatherings, Mlalazi has redefined live gospel production benchmarks across Africa.

Born in Harare and nurtured through his early childhood in Nyamandhlovu near Bulawayo before returning with his family to Harare's Glen Norah high-density suburb, Mlalazi's musical identity was forged at the crossroads of Zimbabwe's richest cultural streams. He grew up immersed in the Seventh-day Adventist musical traditions, where strict four-part vocal harmony, precise choral discipline, and deep reverence for biblical hymnody shaped his auditory sensibilities. Even as he later built a distinguished corporate professional career as a chartered governance professional and business executive, the sacred calling to music remained an immovable fire within him, preparing him for a ministry that would eventually span multiple continents and languages — singing fluently in Ndebele, Shona, Zulu, Swahili, and English.

Mlalazi embarked formally on his professional musical journey in 2014 when he founded and took directorship of The Vine Music Ministry, a premier 15-member vocal ensemble designed to execute world-class gospel choral music. Under his visionary stewardship, The Vine emerged as a powerhouse of vocal precision, culminating in historic milestones such as winning the Best Live Production accolade at the 2019 PERMICAN Awards and mounting landmark collaborative projects — most notably teaming up with South Africa's world-famous, Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir and the Mabongi Feroza brass ensemble for magnificent live recordings that set unprecedented aesthetic standards in Zimbabwean music history.

In 2020, Mlalazi made the decisive transition into a solo recording career, releasing his breakout single 'Uyingcwele' (You Are Holy), followed by the soul-stirring heritage anthem 'Ekhaya'. 'Uyingcwele' became an instant nationwide sensation, dominating Star FM's Gospel Greats chart at number one for five consecutive weeks and finishing in the top three of the overall top 50 gospel songs of 2020. Both 'Uyingcwele' and 'Ekhaya' charted prominently across Skyz Metro FM, Classic 263, and ZiFM Stereo, proving that Mlalazi's blend of soul-stirring African melodic structures with polished symphonic backing resonated deeply across generational and regional lines.

In November 2021, Mlalazi unveiled his landmark debut solo studio album, 'In The Presence 1', followed by a prolific run of chart-topping singles including 'Bambelela', 'My Father's House' (featuring South African songstress Xolly Mncwango), 'Mwari Hamushanduki' (featuring gospel luminary Bishop Benjamin Dube), 'No Night There', and 'Angeke Kulunge'. Among his most celebrated collaborations was the monumental hit 'Pfugama Unamate' (Kneel and Pray), featuring celebrated Zimbabwean gospel titan Minister Michael Mahendere. The song detonated across national airwaves, finishing as the number one gospel song of the year on Star FM's Annual Top 50 and commanding heavy rotation on Radio Zimbabwe and Power FM, cementing Mlalazi's place as a household name in Zimbabwean worship.

Mlalazi's sonic brilliance and artistic stamina carried him to continental pre-eminence. In 2024, he achieved a historic career milestone when he was officially inducted into South Africa's world-renowned gospel ensemble Spirit of Praise, recording standout lead performances including the soaring worship anthems 'Ndofamba naJesu' and the live rendition of 'Ekhaya/Sizohamba' recorded before tens of thousands at Pretoria's SunBet Arena. His induction made him one of only a handful of Zimbabwean vocalists ever entrusted with leading major recordings within the Spirit of Praise franchise, bridging the Zimbabwean and South African worship fraternities in unprecedented harmony.

His global impact has been validated by an extraordinary array of continental accolades. Mlalazi scooped Best Contemporary Gospel Artist at the Zimbabwe Music Awards (ZIMA) in 2022, consecutive Outstanding Gospel Act trophies at the Bulawayo Arts Awards (2022 and 2023), and the coveted Best of Africa Gospel crown at South Africa's prestigious SABC Crown Gospel Awards. On the wider continental stage, he made history at the prestigious Christian Legendary Impact Makers Awards (CLIMA Africa) held in Nigeria, winning Africa Gospel Artist of the Year in 2023, followed in 2025 by a sweeping triumph that included Africa Gospel Male Artist of the Year, Africa Viewers' Choice Award, Best Live Recording (for the 'Great Is Thy Faithfulness' album), Best Collaboration (for his transatlantic anthem with American gospel giant VaShawn Mitchell), and the Music Impact in Africa honour. In recognition of his profound contribution to sacred music and cultural diplomacy, he was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate of Music by the Global University of Science and Technology.

Beyond his musical exploits, Everton Mlalazi is an exemplary philanthropist, family man, and community builder. Happily married to his manager, partner, and biggest supporter Gamuchirai Mlalazi — with whom he shares two daughters, Keisha and Natasha — the Mlalazi family exemplifies grounded Christian leadership. Through their philanthropic initiatives, they have funded school fees for underprivileged children, supported vulnerable township families, hosted free homecoming concerts in Bulawayo and rural Matabeleland, and fostered emerging musicians with instruments and studio funding, ensuring that the ladder of opportunity remains extended to the next generation.

Today, Everton Mlalazi stands proudly and deservedly enshrined on the Zimbabwe Digital Wall of Fame as a true ZimLegend. As an inspirational ambassador of Zimbabwean spiritual music, a consummate live performer who bridged national borders to conquer Africa's biggest gospel platforms, and a faithful servant whose immortal anthems — 'Uyingcwele', 'Pfugama Unamate', 'Ekhaya', and 'Ndofamba naJesu' — continue to lift souls and point nations toward divine grace, Everton Mlalazi exemplifies the highest ideals of excellence, humility, resilience, and African pride.
